Celebrating CSA Week: Exploring the Roots of Our Movement!

Happy CSA Week, everyone!

As we continue our week-long celebration—and more importantly, begin the countdown to our International Symposium—we’re excited to share the Country Reports from the Worldwide CSA Census. These reports take us on a journey across the world, exploring the deep roots of our movement.

We begin in Japan, the first country to implement the CSA system, known as Teikei.

The Japanese organic agriculture movement took shape with Teikei, a model that goes beyond practical needs—it’s a philosophy that encourages a better way of life, for both producers and consumers, through their interaction.

At its core, Teikei fosters a mutually supportive, equal partnership between organic farmers and consumers. This direct distribution system is designed to:

  • Promote ecologically sustainable food production
  • Ensure farmers’ economic viability
  • Provide consumers with healthy, safe food

Ultimately, Teikei strives to transform today’s industrialized, unsustainable food systems into solidarity-based, ecologically sound, and equitable alternatives.
