Country Report: Solawi cultivating solidarity in Germany

🌍 Our journey through the global CSA movement continues! 🌍

As we count down to the International Symposium, we’re sharing highlights from the Country Reports of the global CSA census, stories that trace the deep, diverse roots of Community Supported Agriculture around the world.

Today, we head to Germany, where CSA is known as Solawi (Solidarische Landwirtschaft, or “Solidarity Farming”).

Solawi aims to transform the entire agricultural system into one based on community, transparency, and shared responsibility.

The Core Principles of Solawi

The German national CSA network has outlined several guiding values that shape every Solawi initiative:

  • Shared Costs, Shared Harvest
Members collectively finance the farm’s annual operating budge, the community ensures the farm’s sustainability through solidarity-based contributions.
  • Mutual Appreciation and Trust: Economic processes are rooted in solidarity, not profit. Relationships between producers and members are based on respect, transparency, and commitment.
  • Direct Relationships: Solawi creates strong, lasting connections between farmers and consumers, fostering a deeper understanding of food production and encouraging long-term participation.
  • Budget & Methods Transparency: Everything, from wages and seeds to savings and sustainability, is openly discussed. Some Solawis even hold bidding rounds, where members pledge what they can afford, ensuring fairness and inclusivity.
  • Sustainable and Regenerative Farming: Practices are designed to protect soil, water, and biodiversity, supporting ecological resilience and future generations.
  • Dignity for Farmers: Producers receive fair, needs-based compensation and secure working conditions.
  • A Spirit of Tolerance and Inclusion: Solawi supports human dignity and social justice, standing firmly against discrimination of all forms.
